Zen and the Art of Poker

While Zen and the Art of Poker is probably one of the easiest books to read, and many will think that its too easy – I believe it is probably one of the best poker books out there.  Learning patience and the mechanical play of Texas Holdem would be an incredible asset when playing online poker.  You will learn how to be relaxed and play only with your mind, rather than playing poker with your emotions.

Limping under the gun

For the most part, you should be limping under the gun (UTG) with your decent hands (88,99,TT,JJ,AJs,AQ,AQs,AK,AKs) and not raise – at a full table.  The reason for this is, either you are expecting someone to raise, for you to be able to reraise, or players will assume with a UTG limp that you are strong and fold – giving you the same implications of raising, but still getting potential action on your decent holdem hands.

Top 2 isnt enough!

Such an easy misconception here – especially when moving from Texas Holdem to Omaha – Top 2 pair isnt enough!!!  Regardless of how aggressive the game is, its a drawing game – so if you have top 2, dont play it like you have the nuts!  Infact – wait until you have the nuts, and then play aggressive – as for the most part, you are going to get paid off :)

Be a table leader

If you are at a table that seems to be passive, or not alot of action – be the action man (or woman)!  Either players are going to fold and you will make money off the blinds – OR – you will get some action on the table and you will be seen as being too aggressive/unpredictable.  Then you will get paid off when you need to be!

Bankroll Management

You will probably see me bring this up over and over and over……….. and if it makes one player realize the importance of Bankroll Management in poker, then I will be a happy girl!

DO NOT PLAY OUTSIDE OF YOUR BANKROLL!  You have an easier way of winning at blackjack if you only have 100 dollars in your pocket, as your return could be much quicker!

Poker is not a game of big wins every day.  The swings exist, and you cannot predict when they will come – so always make sure that your bankroll is atleast 100xBB or 10x the max buy-in at the table you are sitting at (for cash games).  If you are focussing on tournaments, make sure you have atleast 25x the buy-ins you are playing.
