Egotism

Pride means the end of wisdom – Japanese Proverb

One of the best online poker secrets I could give is: DO NOT let your ego ruin your game!

Overconfidence is one of the biggest errors in Online Poker.  Humility will help you through the long haul of the game.  Just as lightening will strike more than once, you will go through the swings of poker, which means you will go through winning hands and sessions.  Ego will not help you through these situations and will only assist in you losing more than you need to.

Expecting the worst is the best!

In online poker, if you are always expecting the best possible income, then you will frequently be disappointed.  Prepare yourself for the worst.  Dont think that just because you got dealt Pocket Aces that you will be making a profit from them.  Dont believe that your flopped straight is always going to hold.  Dont think that your turned set is golden.

If you keep your mind open to all of the possibilities in poker, you have the ability to make decisions based on actions and not based on cards.

Mistakes are good

“If defeat has more to teach us than victory, then perhaps a defeat is a victory unto itself?” – Miron Stabinsky

If you can take your past lessons/mistakes and use them as a tool towards your future games, then you are making your losses a win in itself.  As stated before: poker is a game for the long run.  You are given so many tools (especially in Online Poker) to learn from your mistakes, and you have the ability to take these mistakes into profit.

Review your mistakes, and see what you could have done better or how you could have taken action differently.  Incorporate your mistakes into your strategy.

Attend to your weaknesses

“A small leak will sink a great ship” – anonymous

While there is an element of luck in poker, you cannot rely on luck to make you a consistent winning poker player.  Luck will not get you past the weak points in your game.  Take the time to identify what your weaknesses are in poker and learn to correct them.

Knowing the basics is not enough!

Knowing the basics of online poker is not enough.  Study the game, study your hands, study other players hands, read poker books, analyse different scenerios, identify your faults, watch poker on TV….do everything you can to ensure taht your knowledge of the game is continuously improving.  Poker is not a game of now, poker is a game of the long run and of change.  If you do not study, you will not have the ability to keep up with the game.
